Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday met with Stung Treng market vendors and reiterated his promise to pay for the reconstruction of the town’s market which burned down in April, according to his Facebook page.
However, vendors will have to pay new daily and annual fees to use the facility.
The market will be in the same location and is being paid for by the prime minister and
donations, according to the Facebook post.
Men Kong, spokesman for Stung Treng Provincial Hall, said the opening date and the market’s final cost were still unknown.
“The market is 70 per cent completed, but it is just a frame, not stalls yet,” he said, adding that all previous vendors would be accommodated, with 1,080 stalls of 4 square metres, and another 143 stalls of differing sizes.
But rather than pay to rebuild, vendors instead will have to fork over an annual tax and a daily usage fee, which haven’t been determined.
“We cannot estimate how much they are going to pay, but this will be up to the market committee,” he said.
